In Loving Memory of Brother John Barris
ELDER JOHN BARRIS October 11, 1936 - February 22, 2008
1 Tim 5:17. Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine
With the recent passing of one of our elders, John Barris, we thought it would be fitting to create this page in his honor. He was a good shepherd over God’s people for many years and is certainly worthy of the double honor spoken of in the passage above. The links at the bottom of this dedication lead to some of his notes, a recording of his the last sermon that he gave, and some thoughts of people in the congregation. Here are some last words written by our beloved Brother John to the church shortly before his passing:
To My Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
I moved boldly and a little carelessly along life’s way, with no idea that very closely loomed the lonesome valley that overshadows the cold and murky “Jordan of Death”. Ps 39:4 “Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is, that I may know how frail I am.”
I thank the Father of us all for the effectual and fervent prayers offered by you on my behalf. Verily, verily, they were a very real source of comfort to me and a sweet smelling savor that glorified our God.
Please continue your prayers on my behalf. After the immediate heart issues are allayed, another enemy, lurking in my throat, must be dealt with. Pray that God will grant me the strength and endurance to overcome. Mal 4:2 “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings, and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.”
